Cap is an open-source screen recorder for macOS and Windows positioned as a polished alternative to Loom. It records the screen, webcam, and microphone, then either uploads to Cap's cloud for instant sharing via a link, or exports a high-quality local MP4. The app has a notably clean UI for a developer tool — a compact recording bar, smart cursor, and zoom effects similar to higher-priced commercial products.

The codebase is on GitHub under a permissive license, and the team — led by Richie McIlroy — develops the project in public, with frequent updates posted on Twitter and a public roadmap. Cap raised seed funding in 2024 and has grown steadily on Product Hunt and in the YC/indie-hacker community.

Pricing is freemium: a generous free tier with cloud sharing, plus Cap Pro for longer recordings, custom domains, password protection, and team features. The local-only desktop app is fully free; the paid tier exists to fund the hosted infrastructure.
