Anime image search is a reverse image search tool built for 2D content: upload an anime screenshot, illustration, fan art, or game CG, and the tool queries the SauceNAO database to return candidate sources ranked by similarity score, with thumbnail previews and links to original publication pages. Supported formats: JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC, WEBP.
Reading the Results Correctly
The tool returns multiple candidates ordered from highest to lowest similarity. A high score means image features closely matched something in the database — but it does not guarantee an exact match. A few situations where even a high score requires manual confirmation:
- Different scenes from the same series can cluster near each other
- A flipped or cropped version of the original may score similarly to the source
- An artist's multiple works in the same style may all score high
When the first result is not the right source, check the thumbnails and source links of lower-ranked entries before concluding nothing was found.
Image Conditions That Reduce Match Accuracy
The following all meaningfully hurt the chance of finding a source:
- Heavy watermarks covering key visual areas
- Aggressive cropping that removes too much context
- Color filters, grading, or composite effects applied over the original
- Perspective distortion from photographing a screen at an angle
- Resolution below 200×200 pixels
If a search comes up empty, try uploading a differently cropped version of the same image, or find a higher-resolution or less-processed copy.
Database Coverage and Its Gaps
SauceNAO indexes content from pixiv, Danbooru, AniDB, MangaDex, Gelbooru, and related platforms. The following situations often produce no results:
- Recent works not yet indexed
- Content from niche communities or non-mainstream publishing platforms
- Images from private channels or non-public shares
- Original works never posted online
If SauceNAO finds nothing, trace.moe is specialized for locating anime screenshots to the specific episode and timestamp. Google Images casts a broader net but is less specialized for 2D content. IQDB also indexes portions of 2D image libraries.
Using Results Responsibly
Search results identify sources — they do not grant usage rights. Once you locate the original, check the artist's repost and usage policy before sharing, modifying, or using the work commercially. When in doubt, contacting the original creator directly is the safest approach.
