GPT Image 2 converts text descriptions into images, with particular strength in accurately rendering text inside the image, following layout instructions, and maintaining composition control. Output is PNG at 1024×1024 pixels by default. This makes it well suited for posters, product mockups, diagrams, or any image where the wording inside the picture needs to be readable and correctly placed.
Quality Tiers and Credits
Three quality options are available — low, medium, and high — with medium as the default. High quality maximizes prompt adherence and texture detail, making it the right choice for final deliverables or print-ready assets. Low quality is fastest and cheapest, good for quickly testing a composition idea before committing. The exact credit cost for each tier is shown in your account billing settings; high quality costs significantly more than low.
Writing Effective Prompts
GPT Image 2 handles in-image text better than most image models. When you need a poster headline, product label, or chart annotation inside the image, specify the text content explicitly in the prompt along with where it should appear. A useful prompt structure: describe the main subject, then the visual style ("photorealistic" or "watercolor illustration"), then lighting and mood, then any text that must appear and its approximate position. The prompt field supports up to 32,000 characters.
Using Reference Images
Good uses for reference images
- Lock in a visual style (specific color palette or brushwork)
- Keep a character or subject consistent across generations
- Provide a composition template (e.g. rule-of-thirds layout)
- Up to 16 images per request for multi-angle guidance
Reference image constraints
- Each reference image must be under 20 MB
- Images are automatically resized to max 2048×2048 after upload
- Very small or heavily compressed images reduce guidance quality
- Reference images are optional — text prompt alone works fine
Saving Generated Images
Generated images appear in the results area and can be downloaded from there. The server only stores them temporarily — download anything you want to keep. Recent generations are also listed in the history panel.
