Chinese Text Converter

Overview

Chinese Simplified–Traditional converter converts text between Simplified Chinese (used in mainland China) and Traditional Chinese (used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau), with separate modes for Taiwan and Hong Kong regional vocabulary. The conversion runs entirely in the browser using a WebAssembly module and is real-time — no button press required after typing.

Why Region-Specific Modes Matter

Generic Simplified → Traditional conversion (s2t) only changes character shapes. It does not replace vocabulary that differs by region, which causes the output to feel unnatural to readers in Taiwan or Hong Kong. The region modes do both:

Mainland SimplifiedTaiwan Traditional (s2tw)Hong Kong Traditional (s2hk)
软件軟體軟件
网络網路網絡
出租车計程車的士
土豆馬鈴薯薯仔
打印列印列印

Notice that Taiwan and Hong Kong sometimes differ from each other too — choose the mode that matches your target audience.

Six Conversion Directions

  • s2t — Simplified → Traditional (generic, no regional vocabulary)
  • t2s — Traditional → Simplified (generic)
  • s2tw — Simplified → Taiwan Traditional (includes Taiwan vocabulary)
  • s2hk — Simplified → Hong Kong Traditional (includes HK vocabulary)
  • s2twp — Simplified → Taiwan Traditional with phonetic notation
  • hk2s — Hong Kong Traditional → Simplified

First-Load Delay

The tool initializes a WebAssembly module on first load, which takes 1–2 seconds. The input box is disabled during this time and shows an "Initializing" message. After that, conversion is instant.

What Is Not Converted

Punctuation (full-width vs half-width, quotation mark style) is outside the conversion scope and must be adjusted manually. Rare characters, newly coined internet slang, and unusual proper names have lower accuracy than common vocabulary — proofread critical sections after converting.
