Unit Converter

Overview

The unit conversion tool covers 23 measurement categories — from everyday length, weight, and temperature to electrical, digital storage, and engineering units. Select a category, enter a value, and the converted result appears instantly. Both the source and target unit dropdowns have search built in, so you can type an abbreviation like mph or kWh instead of scrolling.

KB vs. KiB: The Digital Storage Confusion

Digital storage is the most common source of conversion disputes. The tool includes both standards:

  • KB, MB, GB (decimal, SI): 1 KB = 1,000 B — used by hard drive manufacturers and network speed ratings
  • KiB, MiB, GiB (binary, IEC): 1 KiB = 1,024 B — used by operating systems when displaying file sizes

A drive advertised as 1 TB shows as roughly 931 GiB in Windows File Explorer, and about 954 GB in macOS Finder — the discrepancy comes entirely from this 1,000 vs. 1,024 difference. When copying specs between systems, make sure you're comparing the same base.

Temperature: Not a Simple Multiplier

Celsius to Fahrenheit is not a proportional conversion — 0°C = 32°F, and 100°C = 212°F. Kelvin is the absolute thermodynamic scale where 0 K = -273.15°C. Picking the wrong starting unit produces wildly different results, so double-check which unit your source value is in before converting.

Month and Year Conversions Are Approximate

Time conversions involving months or years use average values (1 month = 30.4375 days, 1 year = 365.25 days). For calendar-accurate date arithmetic, use a dedicated date calculator instead.

Searching Across Categories

On the main page, type a unit name or abbreviation in the search box to jump directly to the relevant category. Inside a category, both the source and target dropdowns also have search — useful when a category contains dozens of units (pressure has 10+, digital storage has 15+).
